The Government of Canada continues to issue new warnings, and that includes popular vacation spots like Cabo San Lucas in Mexico. An advisory was recently issued for Baja California Sur due to ongoing security threats.
Like Cabo San Lucas, Thailand continues to be a popular hot spot for North Americans, with so many top attractions, including Wat Phra Chetuphon, Chatuchak Weekend Market and The Grand Palace.
Despite its popularity and influx of tourists over the years, there are several regions that travelers need to avoid completely. The Government of Canada just updated its warning, with several regional “Avoid all travel” advisories, along with areas that tourists should “exercise caution” in. We’ll take a closer look at the details, and the specific areas tourists need to avoid.
It is important to remember that even in the tourist attraction areas, travelers should always exercise caution and be aware of their surroundings.

Thailand Is Currently Under A “High Degree Of Caution” Warning And Has Several Regional “Do Not Travel” Advisories
Thailand is once again trending upwards in terms of visitors. Prior to the pandemic in 2019, Thailand recorded record-breaking numbers for tourism, with 39.9 million. In 2023, tourism once again started to surge upward, with 28.15 million international tourists visiting.
As far as Canadians go, Thailand continues to be a popular destination. In January 2025 alone, 36,225 Canadians entered Thailand. That trend is only set to increase with a busy summer ahead of travel for Canadians, especially with plans to the United States nixed by lots of tourists.
Despite the surge, there are “Avoid all travel” warnings tourists need to know about, and they include four main regions which are off limits, according to the Canadian Government.
Avoid All Travel In Thailand To:
- Narathiwat
- Pattani
- Songkhla
- Yala
According to the Government of Canada update, attacks in these regions have been politically motivated, and include shootings, bombings and arson.
The Canadian government wrote in its advisory, “These deadly attacks include shootings, bombings and arson, and are usually directed at military, government and security buildings and personnel. They have also occurred in a variety of public places. Martial law and heavily enhanced security measures are in place in Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala, and Sadao District in Songkhla.”
In those areas, enforcement may detain suspects without charge, conduct searches, seize objects or documents, and impose curfews.
Travelers are strongly encouraged to avoid these areas.
Other Areas In Thailand With A “High Degree Of Caution” Warning
Thailand has other problematic border areas in the provinces of Mae Hong Son and Tak. When traveling to the Thailand–Myanmar border areas, travelers are urged to use a high degree of caution due to violence, and clashes between traffickers and government forces. The Government of Canada also notes that border crossing points may be closed without notice.
Preah Vihear Temple area and the surrounding border region are also on the “exercise a high degree of caution” list due to border disputes between Thailand and Cambodia.
