Sonu Sood, well-known for his humanitarian work during the COVID-19 pandemic, has taken on a new role as Thailand’s brand ambassador and honorary tourism advisor. This is a prestigious appointment, granted by Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports.
Announcing the honour on social media, Sood expressed his gratitude, saying he felt “honoured and humbled” by the gesture. In his new capacity, he will promote Thailand as an ideal travel destination, especially for Indian tourists, highlighting its culture, beauty, and hidden gems.
This comes days after Thailand’s Tourism Ministry also announced that the visa-free entry policy for Indian travellers, initially set to end on November 11, 2024, will be extended indefinitely. Under this policy, Indian citizens can enjoy a 60-day stay without a visa, with an option to extend it by an additional 30 days. This change has already encouraged more Indians to visit Thailand, and with Sood’s support, tourism between the two countries is set to flourish even more.
To make the most of Thailand’s lesser-known spots, here’s a list of must-visit destinations that offer unique experiences away from the usual tourist hubs.
1. Koh Yao Noi
Nestled between Phuket and Krabi, Koh Yao Noi is an idyllic island perfect for travelers looking to escape the crowds. This small island features serene beaches, traditional fishing villages, and lush mangrove forests. Visitors can enjoy kayaking, birdwatching, and cycling through rural Thai landscapes. Koh Yao Noi offers an authentic experience, with luxurious yet low-key resorts that emphasise eco-friendly travel.
2. Sukhothai Historical Park
For history enthusiasts, Sukhothai offers a glimpse into ancient Thailand, far removed from the bustling modernity of Bangkok. As the first capital of the Kingdom of Siam, Sukhothai is filled with awe-inspiring temples, Buddha statues, and well-preserved ruins. Unlike the more popular Ayutthaya, Sukhothai’s quieter atmosphere allows for a more intimate exploration of Thailand’s storied past, particularly when cycling through its sprawling, scenic grounds.
3. Chiang Dao
Chiang Dao is a nature lover’s paradise known for its limestone caves, hot springs, and mountainous landscapes. Located north of Chiang Mai, Chiang Dao is often overlooked by tourists but offers trekking trails, caves adorned with stalactites and stalagmites, and beautiful Buddhist shrines within the caves. Adventurers can explore the mountains or relax in the peaceful Chiang Dao hot springs.
4. Khanom
A peaceful coastal town in southern Thailand, Khanom is famous for its rare pink dolphins. With a tranquil shoreline and scenic waterfalls, Khanom is ideal for a quiet beach getaway. This unspoiled town is perfect for dolphin-watching tours, and its lack of commercialisation makes it a great escape from crowded beaches.
5. Phu Kradueng National Park
A favourite among Thai locals, Phu Kradueng National Park in Loei province offers stunning vistas, waterfalls, and diverse wildlife. A challenging hike up the park’s mountain plateau leads to breathtaking views, particularly at sunrise and sunset. The park’s remote location and seasonal closures ensure it remains pristine, making it an excellent choice for nature enthusiasts who enjoy a challenge.
