For many Indians, their first international trip is usually to a nearby Southeast Asian country. Destinations such as Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, and Indonesia are affordable and offer a wealth of exciting attractions. Traveling to these countries is generally much more economical than flying to Europe or America. Many of them now also welcome Indian tourists without a visa. While Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia have gained popularity among Asian travelers in recent years, another Southeast Asian country emerged as the most visited country in Southeast Asia in the first quarter of 2025.
Not Thailand or Vietnam, this is the most visited country in Southeast Asia
Malaysia was the most visited country in Southeast Asia in the first quarter of 2025. More than 10.1 million foreign tourists travelled to Malaysia during this period. Thailand came next with 9.55 million visitors, followed by Vietnam with 6 million and Singapore with 4.31 million.
According to Malaysia Tourism data cited by NDTV, nearly 4.9 million people from Singapore traveled to Malaysia, followed by 1.12 million from China and 1.08 million from Indonesia.
One of the key reasons Malaysia attracts many foreign tourists is the relaxation of visa rules. Several nationalities, including Indians, can visit Malaysia for short stays without requiring a visa. Tourists can stay in Malaysia for up to 30 days or longer without a visa.
There is much to explore in Malaysia. The capital city, Kuala Lumpur, is home to the iconic Petronas Twin Towers. For those seeking a spiritual experience, the Batu Caves, located just outside Kuala Lumpur, are renowned for their temples, caves, and a large golden statue of Lord Murugan. The city also features lively street food markets, numerous skyscrapers, and luxury malls.
About 350 kilometers from Kuala Lumpur lies Penang, known for its colonial buildings, colorful murals, and local cuisine. The Penang Hills offer panoramic views of the island and are a popular attraction.
For beach lovers, Langkawi boasts clear waters, stunning islands, and a cable car that provides breathtaking views. Nature enthusiasts can visit the Cameron Highlands for its tea plantations and cool climate or Borneo for its rainforests and wildlife.
Additionally, many travelers choose Malaysia for its proximity to Singapore. Visitors often plan trips to both countries together, as the journey between Singapore and Malaysia is simple and affordable. Travelers can opt for flights, drive, or take one of the several overnight buses connecting the two countries. This makes it easy for tourists to enjoy diverse cultures and experiences in a single trip.
